Where to Stay in Sithonia, Halkidiki: Best Areas and Villages

Sithonia, the middle peninsula of Halkidiki, is around 50 km long, and where you stay shapes your whole holiday. The west coast is livelier and catches the sunset; the east coast is calmer, greener and faces Mount Athos and the Diaporos islands; the south is wild and remote. Here is a practical guide to the best areas to stay in Sithonia.
Nikiti — the gateway
Nikiti sits at the start of the peninsula, about 1 hour 15 minutes from Thessaloniki Airport. It has a picturesque old village of stone houses, long sandy beaches such as Elia and Lagomandra nearby, and plenty of shops and tavernas. A convenient choice if you want to explore all of Halkidiki by car.
Neos Marmaras — lively west coast
The largest resort town in Sithonia, with a harbour, waterfront cafés, bars and boat trips. Best for travellers who want evenings out and restaurants within walking distance. In July and August it is the busiest part of the peninsula.
Vourvourou — calm lagoon on the east coast
Vourvourou is a low-rise village of pine-shaded summer houses around a sheltered bay, protected by the Diaporos islands. The sea is shallow, turquoise and usually flat, which makes it one of the best places in Halkidiki for families, swimmers and anyone who wants quiet. Boat rental to the Blue Lagoon starts right in the bay, and Mount Athos cruises leave from Ormos Panagias, 10 minutes away.

Sarti — views of Mount Athos
Sarti, further south on the east coast, has a long sandy beach with views straight across to Mount Athos, plus a relaxed village centre. A good balance between beach life and evening atmosphere.
Toroni and Porto Koufo — the wild south
The southern tip of Sithonia is the most remote part of the peninsula: rocky coves, the natural harbour of Porto Koufo and quiet beaches such as Kalamitsi. Ideal for nature lovers, but further from everything else.
