Vourvourou Blue Lagoon and Diaporos Boat Trip Guide

Aerial view of Vourvourou bay and the Diaporos islands, Sithonia

The Blue Lagoon of Vourvourou is one of the most photographed spots in Halkidiki: a stretch of impossibly turquoise, shallow water between the Diaporos islands, just off the coast of Sithonia. The best way to experience it is by boat — and in Vourvourou you can rent a small boat for the day without a licence. This guide explains how.

Where is the Vourvourou Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon lies in the channel between Diaporos, the largest island of the Vourvourou archipelago, and the smaller islets around it. The sandy seabed is only a few metres deep, which gives the water its bright turquoise colour. It is a short boat ride from the Vourvourou bay — usually 10 to 20 minutes, depending on where you start.

Renting a boat in Vourvourou

Several rental points along the Vourvourou bay offer small motorboats that can be driven without a boat licence (engines up to 30 hp). You receive a short briefing, a map of the area and safety equipment. Prices depend on the season and the size of the boat, so it is worth booking a day ahead in July and August.

  • Most licence-free boats take 4 to 6 people — larger groups can rent two boats or book a skippered trip.
  • Rentals usually run from morning until early evening; fuel may or may not be included.
  • Ask for the recommended anchoring spots and the areas to avoid near the rocks.

What to see around Diaporos

  • The Blue Lagoon — anchor on the sand and swim in waist-deep turquoise water.
  • Diaporos beaches — the island has several small sandy coves that can only be reached by sea.
  • Snorkelling spots — the rocky edges of the islets are full of fish and very clear water.
  • Sunset return — the light over the Vourvourou bay in the evening is spectacular.

Tips for your boat trip

  • Go early: by midday in high season the lagoon can get busy.
  • Check the wind — the bay is sheltered, but on windy days the open sea beyond the islands can be choppy.
  • Anchor only on sand, never on the seagrass (Posidonia) meadows that protect the clear water.
  • Bring sun protection, water, snorkelling gear and a bag for your rubbish.
